  1. Definition: A Thomas Munson Reference Number (RN) is a number for an individual who is a documented direct descendant of Thomas Munson.For example, the RN for Thomas1 Munson, the originator, is 1. He was born in 1612. The superscript 1 after his first name signifies the generation. His first daughter Elisabeth2 Munson has RN 2 and was born in 1641. His son Samuel2 Munson has RN 3 and was born in 1643, and his second daughter Hanna2 Munson has RN 4 and was born in 1648. As the generations go, Samuel2 had 10 children (grandchildren to Thomas1), but only nine were assigned RNs, 5 through 13. Samuel2’s son Samuel3 has RN 6. Samuel3’s fifth child and fourth son Waitstill4 Munson, great-grandson to Thomas1, has RN 276 and is the namesake of the Clan Waitstill. Subsequent generations of Munson descendants are “catalogued” with a specific lineage notation. For example: Benjamin7 Munson of Clan Waitstill with RN 316 was born in 1782, and his lineage descendancy is annotated as Benjamin7 (Reuben6, Reuben5, Waitstill4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Thomas1).

    Currently, we have Thomas1 Munson descendants that are of generation 15 who were born in 2026, and these direct descendants have long lineage descendancy lists. RNs now total into the 10,000s.     Note: Reference Numbers are totally different from Membership Numbers of members of the Thomas Munson Foundation. If you are a member of the Foundation and have a membership number, do not use this as your RN. It will be rejected.

  2. If you do not have a Reference Number, you must contact TMF President Melvyn Douglass at President@thomasmunson.org, and use the subject line: “Request for Genealogy Help”, and he will work with you to assign you an RN.
  3. You will need the following information to document your direct descendancy from Thomas1 Munson.
    1. If you have grandparents or older generation ancestors with RNs, provide their names, RNs, and clan name.
    2. Birth certificates of the Munson descendant generations from the last ancestor with an RN.
    3. Your birth certificate to document your parentage as a Munson descendant.
